The Northeast Iowa Council is pleased to honor Steven Kocourek as a Spotlight Volunteer! Steven currently serves as the Committee Chair for Pack 14 and an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 14.
Steven and his wife, Carrie, have two sons – Wesley and Andrew. Outside of Scouting Steven is an engineer at John Deere. In his free time, he also enjoys bicycling, and wood working.
What motivates you to give your time to Scouting?
It started our as a way to spend time with my sons. Now it’s that and more. You get to see all the Scouts develop as they grow older. You start with kids that are afraid to do anything and a couple of years later they can do anything they want.
What aspects of Scouting do you enjoy the most?
Teaching the Scouts, learning the information myself, spending time outside, working with the other leaders.
What have you learned through Scouting?
I’ve learned so many things. Before I became involved in Scouts, I had never even camped. Now I’m learning all the camping and Scout things, but also how to work with the Scouts, their parents and other leaders. Being a Scout leader can be some work, but it is also fun.
What advice can you give to new Scouting parents?
Get involved. This is a great chance to spend time with your kids, teach them, and have fun yourself.
Please share a favorite Scouting memory.
Seeing my sons develop and advance is great but my favorite Scouting memory would be the completion of Wood Badge training. Overcoming the doubts at the beginning of the class, meeting many great leaders, and making good friends.
On behalf of the Northeast Iowa Council, please help us say thank you to a very dedicated Scouter, Steven Kocourek!
