The Northeast Iowa Council is pleased to honor Owen Leeser as a Spotlight Volunteer! Owen has been in Scouting approximately 25 years, with 20 of those being a committee member. He currently serves as a committee member and treasurer for Troop 70 and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for his excellence in service to Scouting.
Owen and his wife Sally (who passed away 10 years ago) have two boys, Adam and Mike. Both achieved the Eagle Scout rank in Troop 70. Owen has two great daughter-in-laws, Amy and Samantha, and two amazing grandchildren, Ryan and Ellery. Ryan is an active member of the Peosta Cub Scout pack as a Tiger Scout.
Outside of Scouting, Owen has worked for years as an electrician, superintendent and estimator/project manager and is now retired. He is a member of first Congregational UCC Church in Dubuque where he has served on different committees and boards including the Board of Trustees. He is a member of the church Spruce Up group where he helps maintain and repair the facilities. He has also helped oversee a few major construction projects at his church.
What aspects of Scouting do you enjoy the most?
I would have to say volunteering at Camp Klaus. First of all, there is an amazing group of volunteers to work with on projects. And then there is the fact my cell phone does not get reception there – so I get some peace and quiet there too. But mostly you are helping to improve and maintain the facilities so there is a safe place for Scouts to experience and enjoy camping. I enjoy being part of a place where Scouts can enjoy the outdoors without all the electronics and learn while earning merit badges.
