Frequently Asked Questions

Camp C.S. Klaus has modern amenities such as running water, flush toilets and individual showers. Restrooms at the campsites are pit latrines, however there are flush toilets at the Munter Dining Hall and Trading Post as well as porta-potties throughout camp. There is no electricity at the campsites, but you can charge phones at Munter Dining Hall, the Trading Post lounge, or camp office.

Tents are on elevated platforms with canvas material. The sides and entry points can all be rolled up for maximum ventilation, and tied or velcroed closed for privacy. Tents are open air, so mosquito netting is recommended for sleeping. You can also stop at the Council Service Center Trading Post ahead of camp and purchase a MosquitOasis. If you wish to bring your own tent, please contact the Council Service Center ahead of arriving at camp.

Maps will be at check-in for all Scouts and parents. Our friendly camp staff (and seasoned Scout families) are always happy to provide directions or walk with you! It is always advised to stay on the road or trails.

Many activity areas have pavilions and programs can continue during mild weather. Our camp staff monitor weather conditions and will inform you if you need to seek shelter. There are three concrete weather shelters located on the hill near the campsites, as well as in the basements of Munter Dining Hall, Visitor Center and Health Lodge. All shelters are equipped with games and activity totes.

The programs at Camp C.S. Klaus are located in the (mainly) flat valley area of camp. Most campsites are located up a steep-ish hill. It is recommended to do daily walks leading up to your camp visit to prepare for the extra walking around camp.

An accessible tent site (including electricity if needed for items like CPAP machines), shower facility, on-site transportation and accessible dining hall are a few of the physical features that help ensure a user-friendly environment throughout camp for campers with physical challenges. Please notify the Council Service Center ahead of arriving at camp to let us know your needs.

A qualified Health Officer is on duty at all times. In the event of a serious accident/illness, the person will be taken to a clinic or hospital in Manchester, Iowa. Parents (if not with the Scout) will be informed if the Scout needs extensive care.

If a camper must take doctor prescribed medicine, the prescription form located at ScoutsIowa.org must be turned into the Health Officer and will be under strict supervision. Parents/guardians can choose to keep track of medications and administration times after talking with the Camp Health Officer. Any medication that needs to be refrigerated will be kept in the Health Lodge.

Safety is always at the forefront of Scouting, by attending with your child, you can closely supervise your child’s activities, ensuring they are safe and following camp rules. Camp is also a great place to connect with your child and other parents.

Embrace the opportunity to make new friends! Scouts are friendly after all! You will be assigned a campsite with other Scouting families who you already have something in common with – Scouting! If your child sees something others are doing, encourage them to jump in!

No! Camp staff will walk you through all the “Scouty” things that take place. It is not necessary to know these ahead of time. Remember to pack your child’s uniform, and yours if you’re a leader, and wear it to the flag lowering before dinner. Parents who are not leaders and don’t have a uniform, don’t worry, it’s not required. (See dress code & packing list at ScoutsIowa.org)

Scouts are busy doing archery and bb range, climbing, swimming, crafts, and more! Find information about activities in the Cub Scout Camp Guide.

After descending the hill into camp, you will find a parking space in the parking lot and walk across the footbridge to the check-in table. There you’ll receive your campsite and programming information. You will also turn in your Annual Health & Medical Record to the Camp Medic. A camp staff member will give you an introduction tour as your campsite group makes their way to your campsite. The Camp Ranger will transport your items to your campsite. It is suggested to pack your campsite items in a tote to remain dry and for easier transportation.

Camp assistance (called campership) is available. You can apply online by clicking the Campership button above.

We will do all the cooking for you! Providing healthy and nutritious meals helps to keep Scouts (and adults) powered and focused on activities during their time at camp. Our menus are dietician approved.

The Camp Trading Post is also stocked with items to stay full throughout the day.

Please contact the Council Service Center when you register for camp so reasonable accommodations may be made. You should also introduce yourself to the camp cook and medic when you tour camp to clarify any necessary accommodations.
