High Adventure

The Northeast Iowa Council has an active High Adventure Committee that helps Scouts and troops participate in trips of a lifetime through Scouting High Adventure opportunities.

The NEIC High Adventure Committee is available to make presentations to your unit.  We need to know your preferred meeting date and time, the length of time you have for us at the meeting and the subject(s) you would like us to cover.  To schedule a presentation with the NEIC High Adventure Committee email NEICHighAdventure@Scouting.org or Tim Park at timpark@timpark.us

The High Adventure Committee is dedicated to promoting high-adventure programs in all NEIC units. The High Adventure Committee is responsible for:

  • Providing information and assistance to NEIC youth and adults on High Adventure program opportunities with vacancies and recent news, including training opportunities
  • Conducting planning, logistics and training for expeditions to National High Adventure bases and the National Jamboree with contingent crews from our Council. (A contingent crew is made up of Scouts from various units.)

The Northeast Iowa Council has had Scouts and adults attend each of the National High Adventure bases and we can share information, tips, tricks and always good stories about them.

If you have a group of between 7 and 12 Scouts and adults interested in attending one or more of the bases, let us know and we will work with you to coordinate a trip.  Please note that standard reservations are made two years prior to desired attendance.

Upcoming Trips

Philmont Summer 2027

  • Are you tired of hearing stories from OTHERS about their trips to Philmont?
  • Would you like to take one shower in 11 days and not be criticized for it?
  • Do you want to have the experience of a lifetime?
  • Would you like to accomplish new and challenging feats like you’ve never even seen before?

What is Philmont Scout Ranch?

Philmont Scout Ranch is Scouting’s premier high-adventure experience. Located in the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico near Cimarron, Philmont spans more than 140,000 acres of pristine wilderness, featuring towering peaks, sweeping meadow, deep canyons, and miles of unspoiled backcountry trails. Each summer, thousands of Scouts and leaders from across the country travel to Philmont to challenge themselves physically, mentally, and personally in one of the most unforgettable adventures Scouting has to offer.

At its core, a Philmont trek is an extended backpacking expedition, typically lasting 7-12 days, where crews hike through the backcountry carrying everything they need on their backs. Along the way, participants stay in backcountry camps, cook their own meals, and take part in immersive programs that include rock climbing, shooting sports, conservation work, mountain hiking, frontier-era skills, and living history experiences inspired by the American West. Philmont is known not just for its scenery, but for pushing participants to grow in leadership, teamwork, resilience, and confidence.

Philmont is more than just a destination – it is a milestone. Many Scouts consider it the highlight of their Scouting journey and a defining life experience. Crews learn to rely on one another, overcome obstacles together, and step outside their comfort zones in ways that build character and lifelong memories. Wheter attending with your troop or as part of a council contingent, Philmont offers teh opportunity to be part of something bigger than yourself – an adventure that will be talked about long after the trail dust has settled.
