Peter Murphy Volunteer Spotlight

The Northeast Iowa Council is pleased to honor Peter Murphy as a Spotlight Volunteer! Peter currently serves as the Cubmaster and Popcorn Kernel for Pack 50. He has been involved in Scouting for three years.

Peter and his wife Audra have two children they are proud of: William and Isla.

What motivates you to give your time to Scouting?
I like to see the kids develop as a group/den and individually. Seeing the Scouts grow more mature as they learn how to cooperate and listen to each other while doing their best.

What aspects of Scouting do you enjoy the most?
Spending time at Camp Klaus or Camp Burton. Also I really enjoy being the Popcorn Kernel for our pack. The kick-off event is one of the most fun events. The Scouts learn so many great skills during the selling process. Goal setting, sales, approaching neighbors/community members, money management and organization skills. All skills that will serve them well in the future.

What advice can you give to new Scouting parents?
Every leader was a new Scout parent once. Help out where it is easiest for you, start small and meet the parents/Scouts as you go. Your child will always remember Scouting and when you volunteered to help.

Please share a favorite Scouting memory.
Last year’s pinewood derby was especially memorable. William was old enough to come up with the design, help cut and sand the wood and do the finish painting. He choose a Cobra Kai themed car and he won 2nd place. Two of Williams friends choose to do karate themed cars too. A Miyagi-Do dojo car took 3rd place and an Eagle Fang dojo car won the turtle award. It was a great day and everybody had lots of fun!

On behalf of the Northeast Iowa Council, please help us say thank you to a very dedicated Scouter, Peter Murphy!
