From Strangers to Friends – The Magic of Camp

On June 8, something pretty special happened.

Early that morning, youth from Bellevue, Dubuque, Waukon, and Postville climbed onto buses – many unsure of what the day would bring. They didn’t know the other kids sitting beside them. Some were quiet, some were curious, and all were stepping into someting new.

By the time they arrived at Camp C.S. Klaus, more than 60 youth had gathered for a full day of outdoor adventure.

And then…the rain came.

Mother Nature kept us on our toes with showers on and off throughout the day. But in Scouts, we believe in being prepared – Plan A, B, C, and D. Rain doesn’t stop the fun; it just moves it somewhere new. Activities shifted, laughter continued, and the spirit of camp never missed a beat.

By the end of the day, something even more powerful had taken place.

The kids who boarded those buses as strangers were leaving as friends.

That’s the magic of camp.

It’s in the shared experiences – trying something new, navigating the unexpected, and finding joy together. It’s in the moments where it’s safe to be silly, where camp staff lead by example, and where youth learn to rely on one another. For many of these young people, opportunities to explore the outdoors like this are limited.

And yet, despite the rain, they experienced a full day of connection, growth, and fun.

  • The learned that being outside can be joyful – even when it’s a little messy.
  • They practiced adapting to change – an essential life skill.
  • And most importantly, they built friendships that didn’t exist just hours before.

We are so grateful to be able to provide experiences like this – experiences that stay with youth long after the buses return home.
