The Northeast Iowa Council is pleased to honor Mark Kilgore as a Spotlight Volunteer! Mark currently serves as a Council Board Member, Unit Commissioner, Shooting Sports Chair, and Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 22. He has been involved in Scouting for more than 39 years!
Mark and his wife Lynn have two grown sons, Royce (wife Crystal) and Scott (wife Beth). Outside of Scouting Mark is retired from Andersen Window, and is an Izaak Walton League member. In his free time, Mark enjoys hunting, fishing, canoeing, camping, and antiquing.
What motivates you to give your time to Scouting?
I believe in Scouting’s values. I have seen the affect it has had in the lives of my sons and my grandchildren. I think it has a lot to offer today’s youth..
What aspects of Scouting do you enjoy the most?
High adventure and shooting sport.
What advice can you give to new Scouting parents?
Take an active part in your Scout’s adventure in Scouting. It will pay dividends later in life. In the grand scheme of things, we really have a small window of opportunity to have an affect on our children’s life.
What have you learned through Scouting?
I have honed my outdoor skills, but more importantly I have developed my leadership skills, and I have learned that the Scouting movement is truly a brotherhood that brings people together from all walks of life.
Please share a favorite Scouting memory.
I had a Scout taking the Rifle merit badge that was on the autism spectrum. Seeing the smile on his face as he brought me the last target he needed to complete the merit badge made my year.
