]The Northeast Iowa Council is pleased to honor Scott Kilgore as a Spotlight Volunteer! Scott currently serves as the Scoutmaster for Troop 114 in his 29th year of Scouting. He was awarded the Scouting Spirit Award for Troop 114 in 2020.
Scott and his wife Beth have two daughters (Audrey and Josie), and a dog (Rumo). Outside of Scouts, Scott is a Technology Coach for the Dubuque community School District. When not working, he volunteers with the Dubuque Fly Fishers and the Hawkeye Fly Fishing Association. He also volunteers with his church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Dubuque. In his downtime, he enjoys wood carving, reading, fly fishing, and camping.
What motivates you to give your time to Scouting?
The ripple effect is a big reason why I give my time. It’s not only about my legacy, but it’s the notion that the good I bring to youth is good that they will bring to others in their lives.
What aspects of Scouting do you enjoy the most?
I will always have a special place in my heart for summer camp programs, but more than that, I enjoy working with newer Scouts because of its productive chaos and the gains youth make in a relatively short period of time.
What have you learned through Scouting?
I’ve learned a lot from Scouting that I still use to this day, but the most valuable thing I’ve learned is the concept of servant leadership.
What advice can you give to new Scouting parents?
Be involved. There’s a lot for parents to learn about the Scouting program, and there’s a lot they can share. It is also an opportunity to watch your child interact in a totally different environment than what they may be used to.
